The 2005 & 2006 recipient, Donovan is only the second player in CIS history to claim back-to-back President’s trophies since the inception of the award in 1980. Donovan’s older brother won the Trophy in 2004, also for the Stingers. Pat Donovan returned to Concordia in 2006 with a mission. He wanted to be better than he was in his 2005 President’s Trophy winning season. He wanted to best every play, every bench press and every film analysis. In the process, he would help the 2006 Stingers improve on their 2005 effort. Under his direction—and there’s no doubt that the Concordia defense belonged to Donovan—Concordia has established one of the top defenses in the CIS. When Donovan was in the lineup (he missed two games) the Stingers give up only 11.8 points a game (ranked #1) and allowed only 55.8 yards rushing a game (#1 in CIS). In addition, in the six regular season games Donovan played, their defense allowed only three touchdowns—and all of those were passing TDs. The exceptional defensive play helped Concordia finish in second place in the QUFL and reach the championship game for the first time since 2003. In six games, Donovan collected 36 tackles, but more importantly, he forced other teams in the league to scheme and plan attacks around him. Donovan is big, fast and extremely strong. He has great instincts. He’s the quarterback or on-field coach of the defense. He’s much better in the passing game than most middle linebackers and his ability to go sideline to sideline allowed his team to take chances. The New Hampshire native is one of the hardest working athletes on the team. He spends hours in the weight room where it’s common for him to do more than 40 reps on the bench press. A leader on and off the field, he pushes his teammates to make a bigger commitment. In 2003 and 2006, he won one of Concordia’s most coveted awards. He was named the fittest male athlete of the year. HIS COACH SAYS: Comments from Head Coach Gerry McGrath He's a tremendous athlete. He has a great apptitude for the position. Physically and mentally he's a born middle linebacker. Patrick Donovan’s athleticism and willingness to prepare are admirable. His natural abilities and aptitude for football are what set him apart from the rest. His tenacity may be his greatest asset. He never gets blocked and he'll hunt you down no matter where you run.
He’s a great teammate and a very easy person to coach. He’s an integral part of our locker room and the glue that keeps our defense together.
In today’s society, it’s refreshing to have a player with so much respect for the program and devotion to his teammates and coaches.
